XIX Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín Colombia
“Colombia tiene en el Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín el más importante Festival de poesía del mundo, por la masiva participación del público”, reiteró el poeta colombiano William Ospina en su columna del pasado domingo 19 de julio en el diario El Espectador.
El Festival es una expresión del arte poético como experiencia colectiva de retroalimentación entre los poetas y el protagonista público asistente, participando así de una experiencia intelectual y vivencial compartida, el público está buscando que los versos transformen sus vidas. El público del Festival es un público actuante, no un simple espectador.
El público del Festival se mantuvo y creció gradualmente en calidad y cantidad en 2009. Las encuestas realizadas durante el XIX Festival, demuestran que los asistentes leen regularmente libros de poemas. El impacto social y cultural del evento aumentó también por el acceso a la información sobre el Festival, ahora con mayor cubrimiento de TV (transmisiones en directo y varias notas en diferido), a través de un amplio registro de prensa, radio e Internet, con numerosos despachos internacionales. La página Web del Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín ha alcanzado una cifra superior a los 40.000 visitantes calificados en el último mes y se lee actualmente en 135 países, en dos idiomas.
Cada celebración del Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín es un ejercicio ritual de renovación de la energía de la ciudad. Aunque en apariencia la poesía no ha cambiado la historia humana, sí ha transformado la visión espiritual y la sensibilidad humana sobre la historia. Sin la poesía el mundo no existiría. Formas racionales e irracionales del conocimiento poético atraviesan cada conmemoración de este encuentro internacional, y el pueblo bien sabe que el terror y la muerte no son la salida a la profunda crisis del ser humano, y que el Festival es una gran energía viviente que contrasta fuertemente a la muerte, como lo expresara el poeta vietnamita Nguyen Quang Thieu.
El Festival genera una atmósfera y un movimiento en la conciencia colectiva del público que percibe que la realidad puede ser modificada desde el interior de las personas, que se expresan como la manifestación y acción de una intimidad personal y colectiva. Se gesta una realidad distinta a la dolorosa historia colombiana.
Una asistente a la Escuela de Poesía se manifestó sobre las reiteradas críticas que hacen al Festival acerca de que la gente no entiende los poemas en otras lenguas (como si no se leyesen las traducciones al castellano las versiones en las lenguas originales, poema tras poema). Ella expresó que esa circunstancia era la más bella y la que más disfrutaba, al escuchar el canto de las diversas voces del mundo, la otredad de la música y de las tradiciones y leyendas poéticas de la tierra en la escritura y en la propia voz de los autores.
Constatamos también la reiterada y profunda solidaridad de la comunidad mundial de poetas con el Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín, su fuerte relación con la organización del evento y su alta participación en los 19 años de la historia del mismo, que alcanzó la cifra de 915 poetas de 144 naciones de todos los continentes, lo que lo convierte en el Festival poético con la mayor cobertura geográfica del planeta.

XIX International Poetry Festival of Medellin
“Colombia has in the International Poetry Festival of Medellin the most important poetry festival in the world, because of the massive participation of the public,” wrote the Colombian poet William Ospina in his column of last Sunday, July 19 in the newspaper “El Espectador.”
The Festival is an expression of the poetic art as a collective experience of mutual enrichment of the poets and the public, thus taking part in a shared intellectual and living experience, in which the audience searches in poetry the transformation of their lives. The public of the Festival is an acting public, not a mere spectator.
The public of the Festival grew in quantity and quality in 2009. Surveys showed that it regularly reads books of poems. The social and cultural impact of the event also increased because of the greater access of people to the information about the Festival, now with a greater TV (live and pre-recorded broadcasts), radio, press and Internet coverage. The Web site of the Festival reached more than 40,000 browsers during the last month and it is now read in 135 countries in two languages.
Each celebration of International Poetry Festival of Medellin is a ritual exercise of energy renewal of the city. Though apparently poetry has not changed human history, it has however transformed the human spiritual vision and sensibility of history. Without poetry the world would not exist. Rational and irrational forms of poetic knowledge run through each Festival, and the people know well that terror and death are not the solution for the deep crises of human beings, and they also know that the Festival is a great living energy in strong contrast to death, as the poet Nguyen Quang Thieu expressed it.
The Festival produces an atmosphere and a movement of the collective conscience of the public who perceive that reality can be modified from the interior of persons, who express themselves as the manifestation and action of a personal and collective intimacy. A reality is produced diverse from the painful history of Colombia.
A young woman who attended the School of Poetry spoke about the repeated fault-finding of people complaining they do not understand poems in other languages (as if the translations into Spanish of all the poems were not read after the original versions read by the poets). She expressed that this circumstance was for her the most beautiful and the one she most enjoyed, as she listened to the diverse voices of the world, the otherness of the music and the poetic traditions and legends of the Earth in the writing and the own voice of the authors.
The evaluation also took note of the constant and deep solidarity of the world community of poets with the International Poetry Festival of Medellin, its strong relation with the organization of the event and the high participation in its history, that this year reached the number of 915 poets from 144 nations of all continents, which certainly places it as the poetry festival with the widest geographical coverage in the world.
